He’s a businessman, former comedian, television producer, philanthropist, and the head of the U.S. entertainment company Allen Media Group.

Byron Allen is also the new owner of KITV4 Island News which the station announced on Wednesday, January 20th.

Allen talked with KITV4’s Maleko McDonnell to discuss his new ownership of the station in Hawaii, which he says has always felt like home.

“I absolutely love it and I consider it home. Media plays a big role in Hawaii with just a handful of stations, particularly in the changing climate we live in now, news plays an important role now more than ever,” Allen said.

Allen does have a home in Hawaii and shared with McDonnell that he feels it is important for him to contribute and be a part of the Hawaii community. He says there is so much that the station can do.

“By way of example I’m quite concerned by the food insecurity in this state. We have over 156,000 people who go to bed hungry every night. 55,000 are children. This is something that we as a community together can eliminate food insecurity,” Allen said.

Allen is personally giving $100K to Feeding America for Hawaii. For every dollar someone gives, Feeding America for Hawaii can deliver ten meals. Therefore his contribution will generate 1 million meals.

“We as a station are going to lean in and help the community eliminate food insecurity. It’s a blessing to be in a position to own something like KITV you want to make sure you do God’s work and help God’s children and lean in and make it better. I’m a firm believer that together we can make it a slice of heaven right here on earth if we all bring our best that is important and you will see that at KITV we really care about the community,” Allen said.

Byron Allen, the new owner of KITV4 Island News, Hawaii’s locally owned broadcast station, shows a commitment to news quality, truth and a commitment to helping our community with feeding Hawaii’s families.

The Allen Media Group purchased KITV4 Island News from Lilly Broadcasting, which has owned a couple of companies here in Hawaii.

On Wednesday the Lilly Broadcasting family announced it will also donate $100K to Feeding America and the Hawaii Food Bank. Both companies are committed to eliminating food insecurity in the islands.
